Why homeowners are switching

Old gas and oil heating is getting harder to justify

Rising energy costs have pushed many Scottish homeowners to rethink how they heat their homes. Ageing gas and oil systems tend to be more expensive to run, more expensive to replace, and less future-proof every year.

A modern air source heat pump can lower running costs, keep your home comfortably warm, and for eligible homes it can unlock substantial government funding. The quickest way to find out where you stand is to check:

Common questions

Heat pump funding, answered

Who is eligible for the Home Energy Scotland Grant & Loan?
It's for owner-occupiers in Scotland. You must own the property as a private individual, and it must be your only or main residence (not a second or holiday home). Loan funding is also subject to credit and affordability checks. The eligibility check helps confirm whether your specific situation fits.
How much could I actually get?
For an air source heat pump, up to £7,500 is available as a grant you never repay (up to £9,000 with the rural & island uplift). Anything beyond that, up to a combined £15,000 (£16,500 rural & island), can be taken as an optional interest-free loan. The exact figure depends on your property and installation quote.
Will a heat pump work in an older property?
In many cases, yes. Suitability depends on insulation, the existing heating setup and property type. Replacing older systems is exactly our specialism, which is why a proper home assessment matters before anything is decided.
Do you apply for the grant for me?
The application has to be made by you as the property owner. Home Energy Scotland doesn't accept applications submitted by installers. What we do is guide you clearly through what's required at each stage so it's straightforward.
Am I obligated if I complete the check?
No. The eligibility check and home assessment are completely free with no obligation to proceed.
